We offer a range of support for Liverpool University Hospitals patients at our Retreat on the Aintree Hospital site.

Through trained therapists who work on a voluntary basis, we offer:

Lymphedema hand & arm/feet & legs massages

Lymphatic drainage is a specialised, gentle type of medical massage. The aim is to encourage the lymph fluid to move away from the swollen area, so it can drain normally. It also helps lymph fluid drain through the healthy lymph vessels. This helps control swelling.

Reiki

Reiki is a stress reduction and relaxation technique used to encourage healing and provide other benefits.  For cancer patients, Reiki may be able to help reduce pain associated with the progression of the disease. It can also reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms patients commonly experience during cancer treatment, such as anxiety, weakness, and nausea.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a technique that applies gentle pressure to your feet or hands. It aims to bring about a state of relaxation and help the body’s own healing process.

Reflexology works in a similar way to acupressure and acupuncture. Reflexologists believe there are certain points on the feet and hands. These points correspond to the organs and glands in the body. So by pressing and massaging these points it can stimulate energy pathways in the body.  If any energy pathways are blocked reflexology aims to unblock them. Allowing the energy to flow freely again which aims to restore balance to the body.

The retreat also offers patients a safe and relaxing space to share their experiences, worries and feelings over a cup of coffee with the support of our dedicated volunteers with their own lived experiences.

These therapies are for patients going through treatments – it is also an opportunity for patients to talk to the therapists and other patients.
